Charity Quilts.............................

Hello! It's been a little while since my last post, lots happening, quilting, sorting and enjoying life, having a balance in life is a good thing! Several weeks back I agreed to quilt some charity quilts for the Auckland Quilt Guild, they give out many quilts to various worthy causes. Here are the first three:

I quilted "Modern Squares" on this scrappy quilt. Someone will finish this off nicely with binding.

I quilted free hand my plump swirls and stars, again someone will finish this off with binding.

Free hand quilting again this time swirling flowers. Isn't this backing a sweet one, hands around the world, perfect for a charity quilt. Please don't ask me the pattern names, as I do not know. These scrap quilts were made by many people.

I have some other quilts to share with you, just waiting on them arriving back in their owners mailboxes.
If you have a quilt top or two you would like quilted before Christmas I have some time available to do so, please let me know.

Custom quilting for Lesley

Hello June! Winter is finally arriving to the 'winterless' north of Northland! A chilly start this morning but a lovely sunny day. I know some of my overseas followers are starting summer.
Today I can share with you the quilt Lesley has made for her sister.
Lesley asked for custom quilting, cotton batting and a nice mustard backing fabric. Included were two cushion tops to be quilted the same as the quilt to make a nice set. This system works well as I just loaded the cushion tops on to the same batting and backing, saving time and money.

Here you can see I chose the wrong time of the day for outdoor photo's! This is my best spot for getting the whole quilt in the frame of the photo.

I enjoyed working out a design for these large nine patch blocks. using my Proecho (Lisa Calle) curved rulers I divided up the area and added some curved cross-hatching.

Swirl/feather design for the red sashing and a loose flowing feather for the border. I have used Glide threads. The mustard sashings were quilted with a simple diamond design, I will admit I would have loved to fill in each side with a heavy filler to make more of a 'diamond', sometimes I just have to pull the handbrake on!

When I gave Lesley some options for the stitchery blocks she chose cross-hatching over the stitchery but not over the applique. I decided straight line cross-hatching would look pleasing to the eye rather diagonal cross-hatching that I often quilt. Do you see Lesley has coloured in some of her stitchery?

Lesley came up with the design of this quilt, clever women! I'm sure Vi - Lesley's sister will be over the moon at such a lovely and thoughtful gift.

There are the two cushions, ready to be trimmed and made into cushions ready to adorn Vi's bed!
I received this email from Lesley which was very humbling to me: Thank you!

Hi Leeanne,
I received my quilt early this morning and I just cried when I saw it. It is so beautiful, love all what you have done. The backing is stunning. I am sure Vi is going to love it. I am going to Perth in October so will take it with me.
thank you so much. Until next time
Cheers Lesley

Over the last month or so I have been working on a new exciting project for myself . In the evenings and weekends when the mood strikes it's nice to have something to potter with in my sewing nook. Last year when I quilted Juliet's Running Zebra quilt (see here) it was love at first sight for me! I promptly purchased Juliet's pattern. Cute to read in the pattern Juliet gives credit to her quilter.......me!

I then set about trying to source the same fabrics Juliet had used..........not so easy! Here in New Zealand we are months behind the eight ball and so often don't even get half of the yummy fabrics on offer from the American designers. I did manage to get one small bundle of fat quarters but that was not going to be enough, so I 'bit the bullet' and purchased from America, I do like to support local, but I had my heart set on this fabric........and when it arrived I wasn't disappointed.

Please don't sit at your computer waiting to see the finished quilt............it may take awhile!
Linking up with Linda and Julie for 'Sew-Stitch-Snap-Share" Thanks creative ladies!
A little more self indulgence sharing, my over night tramping trip on the weekend to Cape Brett..............here a few photo's. Have I said I live in paradise?

Thank you for taking the time to stop by and thank you to those who leave lovely comments!

Friday wrap up..............................

It's Friday, it's Friday!! It's winter and it's raining...............so much to celebrate!! Glad you have you taken the time to stop by and see what I am up to. First is Norma's jelly roll quilt. Made for her niece.

Whenever Norma asks me to quilt for her she likes me to quilt an all over design through the middle then 'something fancy for the borders'. What you are seeing is a free hand design I came up with that is a swirl with a fishhook look to it (names????)

I used Superiors Omini thread a putty colour, which seemed to blend nicely over the fabrics so well. For the border I simply opened my design up so that it alternated back and forth, perfect for the border and a nice cohesion.

I am sure Norma's niece will love this quilt.

Next is Noeline's pretty quilt called Relic's of Yesteryear which was another of The Country Yards mystery stitcheries.

Featuring exclusive stitchery designs and beautiful threads and fabric. The Country Yard's mystery stitcheries are always popular. Noeline asked for simple custom quilting, nothing too heavy.

I went with my popular leafy vine, ditch stitching around the stitchery feature and of course ditch stitching the frames.

A photo of the backside because I know how much you like to see the back but also so you can see the border design.

I used the print on the border fabric for inspiration, kinda funky feathers! Hiphip hooray for feathers!

Thank you Noeline, enjoy your lovely quilt, which she tells me will go on her bed as a decorative topper.
Most mornings I get up and go for a brisk walk. When I was training to walk the Tongariro Crossing I would climb mount Parahaki several times a week. I still like to go at least once a week if possible. This is a well used walk by many Whangarei folks seeking out their exercise. Moderately steep with many steps, the view at the top is rather nice.

The starting point for me is at Mair park where I go over this pretty bridge, the views are so peaceful.

Wishing you a happy weekend!

ZigZag Quilt

Another quilt by Marcelle, made for a friend. Marcelle wanted the ditches to be stitched & through the centre of each zigzag row.
A lighter shot........

The pattern for the border I have named " Retro/ Techno Stipple". I'm sure growing up we had some wallpaper in this pattern,  only it was orange!
The backing for the quilt is perfect, pink zigzags!
Because I use a domestic machine to do my quilting, all the ditch work & straight lines were done using my walking foot. This gives me confidence my stitches will be nice & even. Also when you are in the centre of the quilt, especially on larger quilts, such as this one, it can be tricky to manipulate the quilt to where you want it! (equals sore arms! ). But of course it is quite time consuming, but I think it gives the best results for the way I quilt.

Having said that, I free formed the border pattern..........imagine turning the quilt EVERYTIME I wanted to do a little turn....I think my arms might fall off!
