Ending the post with a finish of my own. It's no good having my wonderful long arm machine if I don't quilt some of my own quilts! I loaded this one up on a Saturday night, quilted it the next day, attached the binding (all by machine) & a label.......So nice to have it finished, it was a nice sew along on Instagram with Jodi at Tales of Cloth & Rachel at Stitched in Colour.

Wrapping up the week with two quilts, first is Vasanthia's "Scandinavian Rose".
Vasanthia has lovingly stitched this striking quilt for her daughters 10th wedding anniversary present.
A Rosalie Quinlin design. Vasanthia hasn't added all the stitcheries in this design just choosing ones that suited her daughter and a different setting from the Rosalie's original.
Vasanthia didn't want any quilting on the stitchery blocks, but I convinced her it was necessary to 'anchor' those large blocks down. I did so with 'SID' around the bulk of the stitcheries using a fine thread. I quilted a meandering loopy/leafy vine in the background after I framed each stitchery with three rounds of straight stitching using Glides 'Garnet' thread.
Using the same thread I quilted a continuous swirl on the border and viola..................finished!
For the back lovers a shot of the back, but the back looks pink rather than it's true red! A common theme when I photograph reds!
Next is Sue's BIG log cabin quilt made for her grandson over in Texas, who is getting married in September and his wife- to- be most favourite colour is purple! Sue had me quilt and edge to edge design of hearts, I used Lorien Quilting design 'Amour' and Madeira Aeroquilt variegated thread in purples and teals.
Here it is on my machine, at the time we were experiencing lots of rain so an full outside photo was out of the question! The quilt measures 95" x 95", Matilda's Own Polyester batting.
Thank you Vasanthia and Sue, may your family love and cherish their quilts. I am taking a small break from quilting as I spend treasured time with my granddaughter who is coming to stay! So looking forward to enjoying her sweet company.
I will be back soon before you know it with more beautiful quilts!
Hi there quilt watchers and makers, thanks for taking the time to stop by. Today I am sharing a lovely quilt made by Kerryn owner /operator of The Country Yardwho ran a mystery quilt evening last Friday. Kerryn had me quilt the sample up that was shown well into the 'mystery' evening.
Made using dark and light 5" squares this is a gem of a scrap buster quilt! Kerryn asked for an all over quilting design and chose "Resplendent" and I used Warm Grey Glide thread which blended nicely over all the jewel box of country colours.
With the sashing and borders this quilt measures 73" square. The batting is a Matilda's Own polyester. Isn't it a lovely quilting pattern! Below is a photo of the back.
I decided upon finding an over flowing shoe box full of 5" squares I should and NEED to participate in the class...................it wasn't a mystery for me but still most enjoyable. I have made one quarter of the quilt so far.
A friend had a birthday recently and I like to give her a gift every year only this year I wasn't sure what to give. Then one day when I was having a play date at my machine something quite nice was evolving that I thought would make a nice present.
I used two layers of batting, one a polyester the other wool and my nice fine thread and really got stuck in with some heavy background fills and feathers. Then I topped the edge of the pretty tray cloth with a few tiny beads to hold the edges in place.
A photo of the pretty back....................................
While out on one of my walks last week I spotted this lot lined up at the waters edge.................
Hi there! Welcome to my new readers both here and on Facebook. On this fine Autumn day I have two very different quilts to share but they share one thing in common they are lovingly made for a granddaughter.
First up is Jacki's Marti Michell's sampler quilt. Jacki tells me that she started this approximately 20 years ago! She is delighted to have it finally finished.
Measuring 69" x 87", wool/poly batting, Glide and Madeira threads with medium custom quilting.
Jacki likes straight lines and nothing too 'frilly dilly' in the way of quilting. That said she was delighted to have some blunt end feathers on the pretty floral fabric.
Facebook followers of Quiltmekiwi would have seen how I used a mark free method for the undulating spine part of the feather. Some scraps of batting cut into circles placed evenly along the border.
There was the ditch stitching, the following areas were quite small, I placed a pen to show the size.
Jacki usually makes outstanding backings, enjoying using up all the fabric from the quilt top.............
Apart from the off cuts after the binding is attached there are no fabrics left from this quilt!
Although this quilt was started 20 years ago it will remain a timeless beauty.
Next on the agenda is Angela's quilt made for her nine year old granddaughter who may have given up thinking her quilt was coming, so Angela tells me......rather cute!
A very similar size to Jacki's quilt : 70" x 90", Angela's batting (I think it was wool) Superior's Fantastico thread "Playhouse" and an edge to edge pattern called "Butterfly Charm".
Here's hoping after Angela's granddaughter's long wait for her quilt she will be happy!
I came across this photo of Simon and one of our other cats Brian (who sadly is no longer with us).
Although these two weren't brothers they were mates.
Hello readers, my last post I shared two sneak peeks, one is still on the machine being quilted so the sneak peeks will continue on that one, but the other quilt is back in it's owners arms and I have been given the OK to it share it with you all!
Cat - of Catalina's Cottage is back in full force thinking of others , creating for others because she cares.
Made from scraps and a whole heap of love, this lovable, hug-able quilt is going to one of Cat's friends that she felt needed a quilt hug.
Cat chose "Amour" all over quilting design, the hearts are a perfect choice. I did add an extra heart in between the large heart and the inner smaller one, but every so often I left the extra bit out, just for interest.
Polyester batting was Cat's choice and two vintage sheets for the backing. I chose a yellow thread called 'Sunshine'. The quilt measures 70" x 78" so it is an excellent size for snuggling up under, especially when the cooler months arrive..........by they way are they coming soon? I have been melting the last few days here in Northland!
Just recently my sisters and I had the job of sorting our parents life long possessions, a big job, many parts were very difficult, but thankfully there were some fabulous parts. Like finding old photo's, some really funny ones and trinkets that wouldn't mean much to anyone else except us kids. Something that pulled at my heart strings was Mum's apron. I remember her wearing this apron, it is patched from clothing remnants, After a good soak in napisan, then another soak, then a wash in Lavendar wool wash (this had been in storage for many years in not a very suitable environment) I gave it a cuddle and remembered the cuddles I received while she wore that apron. I had forgotten until that moment. Rest in peace Mum.
Thank you for your emails asking how I have been, you have been missing my blog posts and Facebook posts. I did have a good reason for the break, truly I did!
I have had a lovely restful holiday pottering around, enjoying the company of family and of course some creating.
I had my granddaughter to for a week, the first thing she wanted to do was make a quilt............Awesome I thought, what quiltmakin' granny wouldn't be over the moon about that!? Completely her design, she wanted it to be a rainbow quilt.
When the rainbow raggy quilt was finished, 9 little 'quilts' were also made for her Guinea Pigs. Not sure they will stay nice and won't be worth laundering, but she was so happy and content to just sew away creating from the stack of fabric and batting pieces I gave her. Time to empty a draw out just for bits and pieces for her sewing time at grannies house!
Several trips to the playground were made as well as a trip to the beach and out for lunch, but other than that she was happy and content to sew and play with the Lego. Pretty easy!
I did finish a quilt for myself, which I really enjoyed making. Quite different to what I usually make myself but I like this pattern and when I quiltedthis quilt fell in love with the fabric!
The fabrics remind me of my childhood, roaming in the long grass, riding my horse and hearing what was and still is one of my favourite songs "Wildfire" by Micheal Martin Murphey.
So down to the facts about this quilt:
"Tick Tock" - from Alison Harris' book Growing Up Modern.
Wee Wander fabric by Sarah Jane and a ecru Moda Solid.
Matilda's Own Wool/Poly batting.
Cream flannel backing fabric - super soft and cuddly!!
Panto Pattern: " Amour".
Thread: Superior Thread Omni 'Almond'.
Flange binding.
Finished size: 65" x 85".
Side by side while my granddaughter sewed her Guinea Pig quilts I also made more Scrappy Crossroads blocks.
The title for the post is "back in the quilting saddle", which I am, back quilting for my lovely customers, the postie is visiting more and more, with quilt tops packaged up ready to have some 'frosting' applied. ("Frosting" - a fun whimsical way to describe quilting). I can only show you sneak peeks at this point as one quilt hasn't arrived home to it's maker and the other is being quilted. This one was made with such love and warmth I could feel the love coming out of the fibres! Once again the hearts are perfect.
This one is not going to be finished in a hurry, it is a fairly full on custom job, but will be stunning when finished. The maker of this quilt popped around with her teenage grandchildren to see the long arm machine in action on her quilt. I can report she is over the moon with what I have quilted so far.
Thanks for stopping by, I hope you aren't melting in this heat we are experiencing!
