Quilting for Giles & Bye-Bye 2024!

Hello Quilty Friends!
This is my last blog post for 2024.
What a funny old year it has been, a mixed bag of good stuff,
boring stuff, annoying stuff & EXCITING STUFF!
But I shall end the year with not the last two quilts I completed for customers, but simply two that have been waiting in a file on my desktop for several weeks because Giles two VERY unique quilts are now hung in The Suter Art Gallery I've been working with Giles for several years now & whenever one of his quilt tops arrive in the post it's never boring.
All his creations are his design, no patterns or BOM for him.
Lets take a look at WARHORSE - TERROR BIRD (diptych) 2024:

Quilt Information:

Pattern - Giles' own design - Warhorse - Terror Bird (more details below)
Measurements - 83"x 83" (two quilts each)
Quilting - E2E Quilting - Basket Weave.
Batting - Cotton - Purchased from me.
Backing - Supplied by Giles.
Threads - Glide - Garnet.

Below, two video's of me removing each quilt from the long arm machine:

Here is an excerpt of the gallery's overview of Giles' work:

Warhorse-Terror Bird, Panting says, is not an anti-war quilt, rather
the response of a father of two young men to the way countries
continue to behave when war is declared.
He reflects:
On 24th February 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine.
On 25th February 2022, Ukraine closed its borders to men
aged 18 - 60. Warhorse-Terror Bird draws on a tradition of
quilts that are made entirely from red and cream fabric and
that include abstract, geometric quilt blocks to convey
meaning. Here, I’ve included 'drone' corner blocks and the
'kissing missile' blocks for the borders, along with a traditional
mariner's compass design as the comet/projectile image.
Scandinavian tapestry weaving is referenced in the design of
the horses and bird.

  1. Those are incredible quilts! The Basket Weave E2E really enhances the feeling of movement.
Ha Ha--I will expect my dictionary under the tree. ;)

  2. I will diligently use my " Roget's Thesaurus" more often, and consult the huge Webster's Dictionary my Dad gave me many years ago . The quilts, what massive works they both are, the story behind their meaning, and your quilting. Santa has already visited us, Hugh has his hand held air compressor, and my garden cart with pneumatic tyres will be assembled on 25th.He did ask yesterday when would I be doing the Christmas baking? Soaked the fruit in whisky today, guess that's a good start for mini cakes.
