Sue's Quilts and Elizabeth's winning quilt at the Auckland Festival of Quilts

Sue asked me to quilt these two fabulous quilts she has made for her lucky grandkids. First up is her New York Beauty quilt. Sue asked for very simple quilting, basically just stitching in the ditch (SID) but not each ray, just the arcs and some stipple on the borders.

Sizing up at: 84" x 87", foundation paper pieced rays and a cute little yellow peeper out towards the border.

I was itching to quilt more, that centre was calling out for a swirl, pebbles or cross-hatching...............but I was good quilter and stuck to what I was instructed to do.

Happy Jacks was the next quilt Sue wanted quilted by me, I found this quilt a good cheerful, 'boost you up day' kinda fun!

Isn't it funky and fun! Measuring 64" x 91". These 'Happy Jacks' seem to be like friendly alien spaceships floating over the quilt looking for a good landing spot!

Sue and I agreed that quilting over the vertical brown sashings would make them sink into the background, so the swirl background filler did just that. Then a 'organic' piano key border and a several different quilting designs on the Happy Jacks themselves.

I don't think Sue could have chosen a better backing fabric............all those big spots, perfect!

Lately when I am out tramping the latest thing my eye is drawn to are punga fronds, I now see that when I take photo's I can truly call it 'professional development' for me, because so often this is the perfect quilting style for many of the quilts that pass through my studio. Nature IS so inspiring.

I made a video of me quilting swirls. P.S "look Mum, I am quilting one handed!"

Yesterday I visited the Auckland Festival of Quilts. Another nice set up in the new venue, lots of merchants and people enjoying the quilts. I was so pleased to get a very excited phone call from one of my lovely customers  on Thursday night to say the quilt she entered this year that I had quilted earlier in the year had won the Open Wall section made by 2 or more people. Here is my blog post about this quilt.  This is a Kim Diehl design named 'Snow in Summer', Elizabeth renamed "Carnations in the Octagon". Here is Elizabeth standing with her lovely quilt.

Snow in Summer and Midnight Stars

Snow in summer............oh yes please! There is no snow here sadly but a beautiful quilt called "Snow in Summer". It is a Kim Diehl design made by Elizabeth.

That's the before shot and here's for the after quilting shot................................................

Elizabeth made my job easy as her applique and piecing is lovely. I was naturally asked to custom quilt this pretty quilt and Elizabeth chose Matilda's Own Oh Sew Soft polyester batting.

I was keen to give the snowballs some nice movement between the outer snowballs and the inner cluster. It's nice to have some cohesion to blend and frame every design together, I did this by maintaining the cross-hatching through the central sections of each snowball. Hook feather wreaths for the outer section and some straight echoed lines for the central gathering of snowballs.

I backtracked several times over the line of quilting where the cross-hatching lines came together, two reasons: the first to 'hide' my backtracking, the second to create a 'zoom' section for the eye.

A nice detailed background fill of pebbles, swirls, echo's and the odd bit of "McTavishing". The Applique shapes didn't need much more than stitching in the ditch around them and some petals on the flower shapes.

All the quilting was achieved by hand guiding my Gammill with the exception of the cross-hatching and straight lines, I used a ruler for those parts. Because you love the back shots here are two just for you!

Now to share "Midnight Stars" with you. Made by Kerryn of The Country Yard  using two layer cakes by Moda (Black Tie) and a Moda bakeshop pattern to create a lovely sample.

This quilt is leaning on the larger size at 84" square. I used an edge to edge pattern by  Keltia Quilting called "Limetree". It's a nice soft classic pattern. Glide thread "Mocha" was the perfect thread to blend with the creams, greys, tans and black fabrics. The batting is Matilda's Own Cotton/Poly.

Thank you Elizabeth and Kerryn for your continued support and trust in me.

Lastly I had to share Simon being an "Egg".

Thursday

We are coming to that time of the year again.................Christmas? Well yes, that seems to be looming. But I am referring to The Country Yard Annual exhibition. Always much anticipated by all. A day of fabric, quilts, goodies, live music & scrummy food! What more could you ask for?
The 26th of October is the magic day, so if you are in our neck of the woods, please stop by!
So with that in mind, exhibition or not, we are always coming up with new samples etc.

Not the greatest photography, but you can see the wonderful fabrics, the richness!
Geoff's Mom pattern called..........wait for it..............tulip table runner! We used Kim Diehl , Buggy Barn & reproduction fabrics.
Available as a kit or pattern.

The points are missing along the edge, that's just the binding waiting to be hand stitched in place.

Another book finish for me. Karen Harper is a great author.
“This Home Valley Amish trilogy finale brings shades of the movie Witness to the page, in a pulse-pounding, man-and-woman-on-the-run adventure.  You won’t be disappointed in the ride!”

Thank you for all your kind words about Brian.
